Happy Fire Ant Awareness Week!

This week marks the observance of Fire Ant Awareness Week and that's exciting news for FireRANTers!  It reminds us that fire ants are a pain in the grass not only during the peak summer months, but for much of the year.  We spoke to a reporter in Georgia recently who complained that there was no fire ant season -- it lasted year round!

And we see news that proves fire ants are a dangerous pest: This summer, there have been at least two documented cases of people dying from fire ants stings.

So the lessons to take away from this week are simple: Be aware.  Be aware of fire ant mounds.  Be aware of your family and its proximity to mounds.  Be aware of first aid methods.  And be aware of treatment options.

We here at FireRANT are big football fans (but we'll keep our college and pro affiliations secret; let's just say we root against cheeseheads).  We take seriously the old adage that "the best offense is a good defense."  It's as true on the gridiron as it is in our yards.  Be safe this week and always, and go get those fire ants!
